Reflect is a smart biosensor and app, two powerful tools for tracking and monitoring the health and wellness of adults.
Combining future bioelectronic sensor technology and artificial intelligence for real time health info and proactive personal daily action for both mind
and body.
Project type: Personal
Time Frame: 6 weeks

My Goal
With both awareness of our mind and body and the progress of medical technology we use many tools to track and follow our health. My goal in this project is to simplify health information and make vital personal information accessible.
The problem
The user problem at hand is the challenge of managing one's health knowledge in a way that fits their lifestyle and personal needs while taking into account medical tests and health tracking. This often leads to confusion and stress, creating a "vicious cycle" for the user. The user must balance different health factors to maintain their well-being, which can be overwhelming and frustrating. Therefore, there is a need for a solution that simplifies the process of managing health data, making it more accessible and easier to comprehend.
Solution
With the biosensor and accompanying Reflect application, users can gain control over their personal state of being and daily needs. Using AI to create a personal plan based on their biomarkers and learn about themselves through self-awareness.
Design & Research process
Building an idea
First, I chose my field pf interest, body environment, wearable tech and wellness. I've focused on the future of medical and AI fields and discovered Bio-Convergence, an industry segment within healthcare and research in life science that emphasizes synergy between engineering, technology and computerized systems.
The biosensor concept
The biosensor is a small, minimally-invasive patch that continuously monitors a range of metabolites and biomarkers in real-time, providing easy and affordable access to important health data to facilitate better health decisions.
In addition, the biosensor is a multi-functional device that can perform advanced scans such as brain waves, heart rate, respiration, and muscle activity, and when combined with the app, offers users a comprehensive understanding of their health and well-being.

Personas
Based on user research insights, I created user personas for David and Mia to identify their needs and how meeting them can drive the product's success.
“I like to track my routines and have a sense of control over my lifestyle”
David Alderson is a 32-year-old, Brooklyn-based electrical engineer who prioritizes his health through regular exercise and a sugar-free diet. Despite his healthy habits, he dislikes medical tests and doctor visits. However, he struggles with poor sleep and chronic stress.
Habits:
-
Run twice a week
-
Avoid sugar
-
Go out on weekends
-
Eat at work and cook light dinners
-
Hike
Challenges:
-
Health apps are a bit boring
-
Medical tests are a waste of time
-
Managing stress
-
Schedule doctor appointments

“I want an easy way to track my health and learn how to manage a balanced lifestyle according to my needs.”
Mia Fortman is a 30-year-old, mother of two young kids and an office manager living in London.
She cares about having a balanced, healthy life and does her best to avoid snacks, but finds it hard to keep track of her eating habits.
Getting regular medical tests is challenging for her and time-consuming.
Habits:
-
Weekly yoga class
-
4 cups of coffee per day
-
Mainly eats her kid’s leftovers.
-
Alternates diets.
-
Eats late dinners watching Netflix
Challenges:
-
Taking blood tests
-
Following up on medical test results
-
Keeping track of eating habits
-
Making sense of health information
-
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with
a busy schedule.

Main research insights
01
Self-health monitoring presents many challenges, such as nutrition, the abundance of information, the lack of available appointments in public health care, and self-perseverance.
02
Most of the interviewers care about their health state and invest time and money in it.
Self- esteem, joy and happiness connected directly to the psychical state.
03
Most interviewers aware and interested of the new trends and product in the fields of health monitors and trackers.
User story
After conducting interviews, I mapped the current user journey and developed a desired user journey to guide the flow of the product.

Competitive analysis
By gathering information on direct and indirect competitors, including their features, capabilities, and visual design, I created a matrix positioning Reflect in relation to its competition.

Pain points - The Health Balance Loop
Based on my analysis, I identified the main pain points, which I have named "The Health Balance Loop." This term represents the challenge of managing our health knowledge based on our personal needs and lifestyle, medical tests, and health tracking, which can often result in confusion and stress, creating a vicious cycle.

Design process
How might we?
During the design sprint, I identified all the users' pain points and used the HMW method to identify potential design opportunities. I then divided them into topics and collected inspiration to map out the solutions.

Structural Design
To gain a more comprehensive understanding of the project's requirements, I created a detailed information architecture that included all possible end-states and screens to be incorporated into the design.

First scan
Due to my limited time, I chose to present only a part of the onboarding process of the Reflect app, so I could better understand the core value it offers. Therefore, I concentrated on creating the scan process, which links the physical bio sensor to the app. This step is extremely important for users, and I ensured that its design was carefully planned with great attention to detail.
Reflect home page
The Reflect home page is the cornerstone of my project, and as such, it was my top priority when planning and designing. To ensure its success, I created a diagram that meticulously prioritized all the components of the profile page, and gathered feedback from a targeted group of users.
Personal greeting
Changes based on the time of day and date and add a touch of warmth and personalization to the app.
Vitals cards
Current information. Personalized according to personal preferences, guide users towards their preferred dashboard for each vital sign.
Navigation bar
Designed to be simple and intuitive, allowing users to easily access the main actions within the app.

Profile
Adding a profile picture to enhance personal attachment and guide users towards customizing their experience via the profile page settings.
Emotional tracker
To help users monitor their current feelings and track their moods over time.
Daily insights
Personalized and change based on the user's activity and preferences can provide a unique experience for each individual user.
Home navigation and emotional tracker
I ensured that the home navigation was intuitive and designed to be as simple as possible, with a focus on attention to detail, coherence, and a clean design to avoid confusion and encourage users to explore and delve deeper into the app.
Vitals
Resting heart rate
I developed a new design language for monitoring vital signs. The heart rate dashboard features a live animation that helps users feel more connected to their bodies and current health status. The dashboard displays the user's current heart rate, along with data from the last 24 hours and related articles of interest. For example, users can track their hydration levels in real-time and explore actions to enhance their overall heart health.
Respiration rate
Similar to the resting heart rate, the respiration rate feature enables users to track the quality of their breathing and provides actionable steps to support and improve respiratory health.
Nutritional biomarkers
This feature helps users track their nutrition habits by measuring certain biological indicators that reflect their nutritional status. Each nutritional biomarker is accompanied by an explanation and leads to a personalized weekly nutrition plan with recipes designed to support overall health and help users add important vitamins and other essential ingredients to their diet.
Deep scans
Deep scans using the biosensor can be done with special preparations, such as the brain mapping qEEG which measures electrical patterns in the scalp that reflect brain activity, helping to understand brain function and offer actions to maintain and improve your brain health.
Design system
Following the Reflect Project's design philosophy, I created a consistent atomic design system with interactive components and clear guidelines. This resulted in a visually cohesive and highly functional product that embodies the brand identity and enhances the user experience.
